Owen Cooper clinched his inaugural Golden Globe for his remarkable performance in the Netflix limited series, Adolescence. The Warrington native made waves in Hollywood on January 12, becoming the youngest recipient in the event’s history by securing the Best Supporting Male Actor – Television award for his role in the acclaimed British show.
At just 16 years old, Cooper broke a decade-old record previously held by Chris Colfer, who won the same accolade at 20. Speaking at the 83rd annual Golden Globes event in Los Angeles, the young Brit expressed gratitude to his family, friends, and colleagues, reflecting on his journey from obscurity to award-winning success.
Cooper revealed that he had no prior acting experience before landing the role, admitting to enrolling in acting classes despite feeling out of place as the only male student. However, his determination paid off as he found himself on a Hollywood stage on Monday night, holding one of the industry’s most prestigious awards.
In a heartfelt moment during his acceptance speech, Cooper’s emotions were evident as he paused, only to be met with resounding applause from the audience, showing support for the rising star. Despite facing tough competition from notable actors like Ashley Walters, Billy Crudup, Jason Isaac, Tramell Tillman, and Walton Goggins, Cooper emerged victorious.
The Netflix sensation, Adolescence, received multiple nominations, including recognition for Stephen Graham, Erin Doherty, and Best Television Limited Series. Cooper’s win also solidified his position as the second-youngest male Golden Globe winner in history, trailing behind Ricky Schroder, who achieved the honor at just nine years old in 1980.
