A sanitation worker has issued an urgent plea to residents regarding a common error that is “polluting your waste bin.” Known as the ‘UK’s No1 BINfluencer‘ on social media platform TikTok, the individual aims to raise awareness about a prevalent mistake made by many people.
The waste collection employee has implored the public by stating, “When using your bin, please ensure to remove food from its packaging before disposal. I understand if you’ve forgotten about perishables tucked away in your pantry for months, now expired.”
“Extract the food from its wrapping and place it in the designated food waste bin. Although it may emit slight odors, discarding it this way prevents contamination of your bin,” the worker emphasized.
“Dispose of the waste without the packaging. Consider using biodegradable bags or, in some cases, paper bags permitted by certain local councils,” the worker added.
While acknowledging that some local authorities accept loose food waste, the worker highlighted that using appropriate bags helps in reducing foul smells and lessens the need for frequent bin cleaning.
Moreover, the TikTok influencer shared some amusing anecdotes related to the holiday season, recalling instances where individuals wrapped turkey in foil during Christmas. Stressing that this is not an appropriate disposal method, the worker urged people to use bags for food waste to ensure seamless waste collection.
In response to comments expressing disbelief in discarding food waste without a bag, the sanitation worker noted the importance of these practices. The worker also referenced recent changes in rubbish collection procedures in England, where households will soon be provided with four separate bins, with initial implementation slated for March.
