The British Beer & Pub Association has emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive strategy to safeguard the future of pubs in the UK. Discussions are underway with government officials to address the challenges faced by the hospitality sector before the upcoming support measures are announced. The BBPA is advocating for significant changes to business rates and licensing regulations to provide better assistance to pubs nationwide.
Andy Tighe, the Director of Strategy and Policy at the BBPA, highlighted the increasing financial burdens on pub owners, citing a substantial rise in employment costs and utility bills over the past five years. He stressed the urgency for the government to collaborate on establishing a fairer tax and regulatory framework for pubs to ensure their sustainability in the long run.
Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi, chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group, echoed the need for reforming business rates to alleviate the financial strain on pubs. She shared concerns about the dwindling number of profitable pubs in her constituency and emphasized the adverse effects of ongoing tax changes on small and medium-sized businesses.
Antoniazzi expressed confidence in the government’s commitment to supporting pubs, anticipating positive developments in the upcoming week. She affirmed her belief in the government’s dedication to making substantial changes that would benefit the industry.
In response, an HM Treasury spokesperson reiterated the government’s acknowledgment of the vital role played by pubs in local communities. The spokesperson highlighted the government’s prior support package and reassured that efforts were being made to shield most ratepayers from business rate increases.
