Anthony Joshua’s uncle has stated that the former world champion has indicated his intention to retire after being involved in a fatal car accident that claimed the lives of two close friends. The incident occurred when the Lexus SUV in which Joshua was a passenger collided with a stationary truck on a major expressway near Lagos, Nigeria. The two friends, Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, tragically lost their lives in the crash, and their funerals were held at a mosque in London.
Joshua, also known as ‘AJ’, shared images on Instagram before attending the funerals, where he was seen with his mother and three other women, one of whom held a photo of Ghami. In the post, he captioned it ‘My Brothers Keeper’. Following the accident, Joshua is reportedly contemplating retirement and has informed his family about his decision. His uncle expressed relief at the prospect of Joshua retiring from boxing, citing the emotional toll his fights take on the family.
Despite the statements from Nigeria, Mirror Fighting has learned that Joshua has not yet made a final decision regarding his future in the sport. The driver of the car, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged in connection with the accident, facing charges related to dangerous driving and negligence. Joshua, who was hospitalized after the crash, has since been discharged and returned to the UK.
Stunning details emerged that Joshua narrowly escaped tragedy as he was initially seated in the front of the vehicle but switched to the back at the driver’s request, which potentially saved his life. His time in Nigeria followed a victorious bout against Jake Paul, where he secured a substantial sum of money. Reports of a future fight between Joshua and Tyson Fury have been cast into doubt following the recent events.
Reflecting on Joshua’s career, he rose to prominence after winning Olympic gold in 2012 and went on to become a dominant force in the heavyweight division. Despite setbacks, including losses to Andy Ruiz Jr and Oleksandr Usyk, Joshua displayed resilience in his comeback fights. However, his hopes of reclaiming a world title were dashed in a defeat to Daniel Dubois.
