Britons are advised to get ready with three essential items as a severe weather warning has been issued for 49 locations. The United Kingdom is bracing for a powerful storm with a yellow warning in effect from 8 pm on Sunday to 6 pm the following day. A low pressure system is approaching from the Atlantic, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds, particularly impacting western and southern coastal areas. The Met Office cautioned of potential injuries and life-threatening risks from flying debris.
The national weather agency has provided guidance for residents in the areas under the yellow warning, highlighting the possibility of power outages and recommending the preparation of three key items in advance. These include torches with batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other essential supplies.
In addition, the agency advises taking precautions to safeguard property and individuals from harm, such as securing loose outdoor items like bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences. To avoid delays, it suggests checking road conditions for drivers and adjusting travel plans if necessary by monitoring bus and train schedules.
Furthermore, the Met Office emphasizes coastal safety, warning of the potential dangers posed by large breaking waves and advising caution near cliffs. In case of emergencies, individuals are urged to call 999 and request assistance from the Coastguard.
Paul Gundersen, the chief meteorologist at the Met Office, stated that a deepening low-pressure system over the North Atlantic may bring disruptive weather to the UK, likely on Sunday and Monday, although the likelihood of a named storm is currently low. The Met Office projects gusts of up to 80mph, with windy conditions expected to persist through Sunday evening into Monday, especially along coasts and hills, and peaking in the most exposed areas on Monday morning before shifting eastward later in the day.
