A former Member of Parliament and a close associate of Nigel Farage declined to offer an apology for a controversial tweet deemed as racist, urging for England to be rid of individuals with the name “Abdul.” Douglas Carswell, the former MP for Clacton, made these remarks at the National Conservatism conference in Washington DC, which Farage did not attend due to transportation issues.
Carswell, who was present at the conference but not listed as a speaker, was approached by a reporter from the Mirror regarding his social media post. In the tweet, Carswell stated, “From Epping to the sea, let’s make England Abdul-free.”
When questioned about the tweet, Carswell chose not to provide an explanation, citing his right to free speech as an Englishman living in America. He emphasized that he would not apologize or clarify his statements. He also refused to comment on accusations of racism regarding the tweet, stating that he would not engage in discussions about his social media posts.
After the interview, Carswell blocked the reporter who questioned him. When asked about his presence at the conference, Carswell, now running a think tank in Mississippi, highlighted the importance of his attendance as a former MP for Clacton at the event.
Despite not being a committed member of the NatCon movement, Carswell expressed interest in the energy and discussions at the conference that diverged from traditional conservative gatherings. Regarding his relationship with Farage, Carswell mentioned that they maintain a positive texting communication.
