Wes Streeting has strongly criticized the recent economic statements of Liz Truss, who held the shortest term as Britain’s Prime Minister, accusing her of lacking shame.
The senior Labour Cabinet member likened the former Tory leader’s actions to those of an arsonist criticizing the efforts of firefighters. Truss faced backlash after her brief tenure of 49 days, marked by financial market turmoil, and her unapologetic stance.
During an interview with Sky News, Truss defended her performance in office, shifting blame to the Bank of England and distancing herself from the decision-making in Downing Street. She warned of impending economic turmoil under the Labour government, attributing it to Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ adherence to “economic orthodoxy,” which she claimed had damaged the country.
In response, Health Secretary Wes Streeting dismissed Truss’s credibility on economic matters, highlighting her responsibility for the country’s situation and emphasizing that her advice holds no weight. He criticized Truss for lacking self-awareness and humility, cautioning her against offering economic commentary without expressing remorse for her actions.
Streeting further mentioned the irony of former Conservatives like Truss criticizing the current government’s decisions while neglecting the consequences of their own actions. He emphasized the need for accountability and humility in public figures, qualities he believes Truss lacks.
Truss, in a separate interview with Sky News, expressed skepticism about the Conservative Party’s chances of winning the upcoming election under Kemi Badenoch’s leadership. She refrained from confirming a return to frontline politics and avoided a direct response regarding joining Reform UK, emphasizing the need for structural changes within the British state regardless of who holds power in government institutions.
