Lando Norris was visibly distraught as he slumped onto a sand dune beside the Zandvoort circuit. His McLaren suffered an engine failure just as he was closing in on teammate and Formula 1 championship rival Oscar Piastri.
The unexpected DNF (Did Not Finish) dealt a significant blow to Norris’s title aspirations. This setback allowed Piastri to establish the largest points gap between them so far this season, with nine races remaining.
Max Verstappen capitalized on Norris’s misfortune by claiming second place at his home race, much to the delight of the local fans. Meanwhile, Isack Hadjar celebrated his maiden F1 podium appearance after impressively converting his fourth-place qualifying position.
In contrast, top teams faced a challenging day. George Russell finished fourth, but Kimi Antonelli incurred 15 seconds of penalties, squandering another opportunity to score points. Ferrari also had a disappointing race, with Lewis Hamilton crashing out independently before Charles Leclerc was taken out by a Mercedes driver.
At the race start, Norris focused on chasing down Piastri while also fending off Verstappen’s threats. Verstappen, on soft tires, engaged in a thrilling battle with Norris through the first corners, nearly losing control but managing to overtake the Brit briefly.
As raindrops started to fall on lap seven, Verstappen’s tire wear became evident as Norris closed the gap. Piastri extended his lead, increasing the urgency for Norris to pass Verstappen, which he successfully did on lap nine.
As the rain intensified on lap 20, Verstappen fell further behind Norris and Piastri. Hadjar maintained his fourth position, keeping Leclerc at bay. Ferrari strategized an undercut to overtake Racing Bulls but faced challenges as Hamilton crashed out, and Leclerc was later hit by Antonelli.
In a dramatic turn of events, Norris, closing in on Piastri, reported a strange smell and smoke from his car, signaling an oil leak and ultimately a race-ending failure. This setback could potentially have a significant impact on the tightly contested championship battle.
