A journey to Lapland is a dream come true for many kids, but the thrill of witnessing the Northern Lights had a group of adults brimming with excitement during their expedition to northern Sweden. Luck was on their side as they were treated to this spectacular natural phenomenon on two consecutive evenings, creating unforgettable memories.
Each day was filled with a variety of new experiences, from dog sledding and snowshoe hiking to mastering fire-building skills, engaging with the indigenous Sámi community and their reindeer, and embracing the icy waters of the Bothnian Sea in survival suits.
Lapland, situated in the Arctic region, encompasses the northern parts of Scandinavia. Luleå, the largest city in Lapland, serves as the perfect starting point for exploring this enchanting land of towering pine forests and clear blue skies.
The magical aurora borealis can be spotted from early August to late April, with temperatures plummeting as low as -30°C between December and February.
The travelers settled at Brändön Lodge, located on the edge of the Bothnian Sea, just a short drive from Luleå Airport. The lodge boasts 15 cabins offering stunning views of the Luleå archipelago and the Bay of Bothnia, equipped with snow gear for exploration. The main lodge features a restaurant, bar, lounge area, and several sauna and relaxation cabins.
Another accommodation highlight was the eco-lodge Arctic Retreat in Överstbyn, a favorite spot for celebrities like Daniel Radcliffe. The lodge offers three luxurious log cabins nestled by the Råne River amidst a serene pine forest, each with its own outdoor hot tub and indoor fireplace.
Dining experiences ranged from a cozy meal in a shed across the frozen bay, featuring reindeer and smoked elk dishes, to cooking reindeer over an open fire in teepees and enjoying outdoor picnics by the Kalix River.
The culinary offerings included an array of fresh local delicacies such as fish, meatballs, reindeer, elk, moose, and lingonberries, along with options for vegans and vegetarians.
Engaging activities included ice fishing for perch, a guided hike on snowshoes to explore the local flora and fauna, meeting the Sámi people, feeding reindeer, and interacting with huskies.
For the adventurous souls, a visit to Arctic Bath on the Luleå River provided a unique wellness experience, including sauna sessions and ice baths for a refreshing and invigorating sensation.
The journey also featured an exhilarating three-hour cruise on the Polar Explorer Icebreaker in the Bothnian Sea, where guests could walk on ice and opt for a thrilling swim in the icy waters while wearing flotation survival suits.
The mesmerizing display of the Northern Lights was a highlight of the trip, with the colorful celestial show leaving the travelers spellbound, likening the experience to a magical adventure akin to Narnia.
