“Engineering Creativity: Nestlé Graduate Challenges Stereotypes”

Emma Robinson, a recent addition to Nestlé’s graduate program, challenges the misconception that engineering lacks creativity. “People don’t always think engineering is creative, but it really is,” she remarks. “We’re drawing things, we’re thinking about big ideas – it’s really exciting. We’re the people who figure out how to make ‘that thing’ a reality.”

Emma is currently stationed at Nestlé’s Product Technology Centre in York, the company’s global hub for confectionery research and development. Here, the team collaborates on new product and process innovations for renowned brands like KitKat.

Specializing in designing and crafting customized equipment for Nestlé’s factories, the 24-year-old primarily focuses on chocolate. “My work is mainly in chocolate. And yes, there are lots of opportunities to eat chocolate!” she adds with a smile.

Nestlé’s graduate programs span various sectors, including engineering, technical leadership, sales, and HR, providing a two-year immersive experience across different business functions. Emma shares her upcoming transition to Nestlé’s Buxton center for work on water-related projects, emphasizing the value of diverse product exposure in enhancing her engineering skills.

Driven by her passion for chemistry since school, Emma pursued a master’s degree in chemical engineering. Nestlé’s graduate scheme attracted her as a platform that fosters personal growth and professional development, steering clear of stagnation.

The multinational corporation offers diverse opportunities across categories and the possibility of international assignments, enriching the career journey for employees like Emma.

Reflecting on her dynamic routine, Emma describes the variety in her daily tasks, from assisting in pilot plant trials to utilizing in-house 3D modeling software for design work. She highlights the supportive team environment as a key factor in her rapid skill development, crediting her manager and colleagues for their mentorship and guidance.

While Emma aims to excel in the program and secure a permanent role at Nestlé, she also dedicates time to inspire young girls through school outreach programs, showcasing the intriguing facets of the chocolate industry.

Beyond the allure of abundant chocolate, Emma cherishes the collaborative spirit within the Nestlé team. “Having that collaboration between different people in the building and being able to work on lots of different products and then seeing them on the shelves is really, really exciting,” she concludes, reflecting the vibrant work culture at Nestlé.
