“Poundland Announces Closure of 12 More Stores”

Poundland has announced the closure locations for an additional 12 stores as part of its restructuring plan, bringing the total number of identified closures to 52. These closures are part of a larger plan that involves shutting down 68 stores following Poundland’s acquisition by investment firm Gordon Brothers from Pepco Group in June. Thirteen of the 68 stores have already ceased operations, with 10 closing on August 10.

Poundland has now revealed the locations of 15 stores closing on August 17 and 12 more closing on August 24. Following these closures, another 12 stores are set to shut down. The remaining 11 stores will close on August 31, and the final store is scheduled to shut on September 14, leaving only 16 stores of the original 68 yet to be disclosed.

The retailer is bound by leases on the closing stores until its restructuring plan is approved by the High Court and creditors, with a hearing set for August 26. Poundland anticipates further closures as leases expire, aiming to reduce its estate from approximately 800 stores to 650-700. Darren MacDonald, Poundland’s retail director, expressed understanding for customers affected by store closures and welcomed them to visit other Poundland locations in the future.

Affected staff are undergoing a formal consultation process to explore alternative job opportunities. The Grocer reported that staff at the recently confirmed closing stores were informed last week. Poundland’s restructuring plan also includes discontinuing frozen food sales in stores, stopping online trading, and retiring the Perks loyalty app launched just last year.

Gordon Brothers has committed to investing £80 million in the turnaround of Poundland, having acquired the retailer for £1. Poundland’s revenue dropped by 10.3% to €347m between April 1 and the sale completion on June 12, with like-for-like sales declining by 7.1%. During this period, the number of Poundland stores decreased from 818 to 799.

Interestingly, three of the 68 stores had already closed before Poundland’s restructuring plan announcement on June 17. These stores were in Swiss Cottage (closed April 20, 2024), Chiswick (closed May 28, 2025), and Southampton West Quay (closed June 9, 2025).

Poundland’s frozen and digital distribution center in Darton, South Yorkshire, is set to close this year, with its national distribution center in Bilston, West Midlands, following suit in early 2026. Remaining stores will be supplied from distribution centers in Wigan and Harlow.
