The recent launch of more than 10 short-range ballistic missiles by North Korea has been strongly condemned by South Korea’s presidential office. In response, the military has been directed to maintain full readiness during joint exercises with the United States. An emergency security meeting was called by the presidential office, with officials from the Defence Ministry and military authorities in attendance. The missiles were fired from the Pyongyang area towards the east of the Korean Peninsula, prompting the South Korean government to stress the violation of UN Security Council resolutions and call for an immediate cessation of such actions by North Korea.
The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that the missiles traveled approximately 300 kilometers towards the sea. This launch occurred following the announcement of the scaling back of the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises by the South Korean and U.S. militaries, a decision made by U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump cited a positive relationship with North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un and South Korea’s non-participation in U.S. actions against Iran as reasons for reducing the exercises.
Despite the reduction in military drills, tensions remain high as Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Un’s sister and spokesperson for the regime, dismissed Trump’s gestures of goodwill. She emphasized that the provocative nature of the drills persists, regardless of their scale. Additionally, Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, noted that the missile launch was likely a multi-faceted message aimed at various audiences, including opposition to the South Korea-U.S. military exercises and a warning against speculation on North Korea’s security affairs.
The launch of the missiles underscores North Korea’s insistence on autonomy in security matters and serves as a reminder of the unresolved nuclear issues on the Korean Peninsula. Trump’s previous confrontations with North Korea over missile tests contrast with his current efforts to engage diplomatically with Kim Jong Un. The ongoing debate over the cost-sharing agreement for U.S. troops in South Korea adds another layer of complexity to the geopolitical dynamics in the region.
In a separate development, Japan’s government and coast guard reported that North Korea had fired a ballistic missile towards the sea, with the projectile falling outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, visiting Seoul, emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence between South Korea and North Korea and called for the U.S. to adopt a less hostile stance towards Pyongyang. This statement comes amid strengthened ties between China and North Korea, as evidenced by recent meetings between Kim Jong Un and Xi Jinping.
