“German CEO Pushes for European Shipbuilding Collaboration”

The CEO of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), a German company poised to construct Canada’s new submarines, advocates for increased collaboration among European shipbuilders. This initiative could have implications for Canada as the navy considers incorporating corvettes into its fleet. Oliver Burkhard emphasized the recent partnership between TKMS and the Spanish government-owned Navantia S.A., exploring joint naval projects and potential production of TKMS submarine designs in Spain.

Burkhard highlighted the growing demand for warship construction, noting the industry shift from having time but no money to having money but no time. A report by Imarc projects a more than five percent increase in demand for warships over the next decade. Alongside the submarine construction, the Canadian navy is constructing River-Class destroyers and has indicated the need for smaller, cost-effective, ice-capable corvettes.

The National Shipbuilding Program in Halifax, led by Irving Shipbuilding, is constructing the destroyers and is concluding work on the Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships. Due to Canada’s lack of modern submarine building expertise, the planned 12 submarines will be built in Germany. Burkhard, ahead of his visit to Ottawa, anticipates finalizing a contract with the Canadian government sooner than expected.

Regarding the potential supply of the MEKO A-100 corvette design to a Canadian shipyard, Burkhard confirmed it was under consideration but clarified that there has been no official pitch to Canadian authorities. The CEO expressed readiness to discuss the export possibility and emphasized the potential for the corvettes to be built in Canada with TKMS design.

The Canadian navy identified the need for corvettes, with Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee advocating for smaller yet powerful warships to defend the extensive Canadian coast. Rob Huebert, a defense expert, stressed the importance of military necessity in defense procurement decisions. He welcomed the prospect of increased ship construction to bolster the navy’s capabilities.

Huebert supported closer collaboration among European shipyards, particularly in submarine construction, likening the current market conditions to the creation of Airbus in the 1960s. Burkhard echoed the sentiment, suggesting industry-led efforts akin to the formation of Airbus in the maritime sector. The necessity for enhanced partnerships among European defense companies was underscored by a study from the Center for Strategic and International Studies three years ago, highlighting the need for increased cooperation despite rising defense spending in Europe.
