Dolly Parton’s journey from poverty to success has not only inspired her music but also led to the creation of a theme park, a podcast, and soon, a Broadway musical. Titled “Dolly: A True Original Musical,” the show aims to narrate Dolly’s life story through her own words and the songs that have been pivotal in her life.
In a video announcement, the 80-year-old singer assured that the musical would authentically portray her experiences and emotions. Rather than focusing on glitz and glamour, Dolly emphasized that the production would delve into her origins, hardships, joys, and personal growth.
The Broadway musical will feature a blend of new compositions specifically crafted for the show and some of Dolly’s iconic hits, including “I Will Always Love You,” “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “9 to 5.” Scheduled to kick off on December 7 in New York City, the performances are slated to run until November 21, 2027.
Expressing her excitement, Dolly, with a career spanning nearly seven decades, described the opportunity as a dream come true. The prolific artist, known for penning over 3,000 songs and selling more than 100 million albums globally, holds esteemed positions in both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The musical initially premiered in Nashville last summer to a sold-out six-week run at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts. Director Bartlett Sher expressed astonishment at the profound connection audiences have with Dolly, citing how she has been a beacon of inspiration and joy for many.
Promising an unfiltered portrayal of her life, the show aims to showcase Dolly beyond the glitz and glamour, highlighting the depth of her personal journey. Tickets for the Broadway production will be available to the public starting on Friday, July 10.
