Geoff Burrow, the father of the late rugby league icon Rob Burrow, has sadly passed away. Geoff played a significant role in the awareness and fundraising efforts that followed Rob’s diagnosis with motor neurone disease.
Leeds Rhinos expressed their sorrow, announcing the passing of Geoff Burrow on March 30th. Geoff, a native of Leeds, dedicated himself to supporting the MND community following Rob’s diagnosis in December 2019 and continued his advocacy even after Rob’s untimely death in June 2024.
Described as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Geoff introduced Rob to rugby at Headingley, sparking his lifelong passion for the Rhinos. Throughout his career as a trade union representative, Geoff championed the rights of the voiceless.
The club extended its deepest sympathies to Geoff’s wife Irene and the Burrow family, urging respect for their privacy during this difficult time. Leeds legend Rob Burrow’s battle with MND led to the establishment of the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds. The center, which opened in November 2025, was made possible by the tireless efforts of Rob, his family, and former teammate Kevin Sinfield.
Geoff, grateful for the support received, acknowledged the contributions made to benefit MND patients, their families, and the dedicated healthcare staff. He played a vital role in caring for Rob and their children, ensuring a peaceful and dignified journey for Rob towards the end.
Messages of love and support poured in from rugby clubs like Warrington Wolves, Wigan Warriors, and St Helens, expressing condolences to the grieving Burrow family. Geoff’s legacy as a devoted advocate and loving family man will be remembered fondly.
