A tragic incident occurred in Barcelona today as a commuter train crashed, resulting in the death of the train driver and injuries to numerous passengers. This unfortunate event follows closely after a fatal train collision in southern Spain that claimed the lives of 42 individuals and left many others wounded.
Reports indicate that the recent derailment in Barcelona was caused by a retaining wall collapsing onto the tracks. Local sources have confirmed that approximately 20 individuals sustained injuries during the crash.
Meanwhile, Spain has commenced a three-day period of mourning for the victims of Sunday’s catastrophic train crash near Adamuz in the Córdoba province. The collision involved a northbound and southbound train carrying nearly 500 passengers collectively, resulting in significant casualties.
In response to the Barcelona incident, fifteen ambulances and 35 fire crews were swiftly dispatched to the accident site. Spanish news agency EFE reported that firefighters had to rescue individuals trapped in the train carriages.
The Barcelona crash took place on a commuter train route connecting Sant Sadurní d’Anoia and Gelida, approximately 40 kilometers from Barcelona, amidst adverse weather conditions in the area.
Sunday’s tragic event occurred at 7:45 p.m. when a train carrying 289 passengers from Malaga to Madrid derailed and collided with an incoming train from Madrid to Huelva, operated by Adif. Among the casualties were the parents of a young girl who had attended the Lion King musical in the Spanish capital.
Fidel Saez, who lost his mother in the collision, shared his family’s harrowing experience, revealing that his brother, children, and nephew survived the crash. The impact of the collision was most severe on the front of the Madrid to Huelva train, causing the first two carriages to derail and bodies to be thrown hundreds of meters from the crash site, as stated by Andalusia regional President Juanma Moren.
